| An Interesting Tale - It is Never Too Late |

A Volunteer Researcher was working in the museum on identifying the soldiers commemorated on a Memorial Board recently unearthed in one of Fort George’s casements. All was going well until he came to the name of 8691 Pte J McAskill, 2nd Battalion the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders who was killed in action on 23.04 1915. Although Pte McAskill’s details were found in various Regimental publications he did not appear in the official Commonwealth War Graves (CWGC) records. With the Director’s support and encouragement the Volunteer Researcher contacted the CWGC and supplied them with the details obtained. Some 3 months later an e-mail was received at the Museum to confirm that the information had been accepted, Pte McAskill had been added to their casualty database and his name will now be engraved on the Menin Gate in Ypres. Another Cameron’s sacrifice in WW1 will now be finally recognised.
