For the last 230 years Highland Regiments have been the constant thread which has been central to the history of the Highlands and Islands. This thread continues today. Our Museum tells the stories of the many men, and of their families, who served with those Highland Regiments. We invite you to help us raise the £2million needed to enhance this remarkable collection and create the best military museum in Scotland. This will ensure the heritage of heroes will be seen and heard for generations to come

Archive & Research

The Highlanders' Museum archives contain a large collection of books and war diaries that can be used for research

Archive & Research

The Highlanders’ Museum has a large collection of books relating specifically to the Seaforth and Cameron Highlanders, to military conflicts in which the Highlanders have played a key part and more generally to Scottish military history.

Types of items held
The museum holds standard reference texts such as Army Lists from 1761 which give details of members of the Army and the rank and position they held at the point of publication.

Also, formal Regimental War Diaries detail the daily events experienced by the Seaforths and the Cameron Highlanders during the World Wars (WW1 are bound, WW2 are unbound).

The museum also holds recruitment lists, private notebooks, letters and diaries; scrap books and collections of ephemera such as boarding cards, permission slips and passes. There is also a large collection of photographs.

Enquires
Enquirers are welcome to make an appointment with the museum (0131-310-8701) to come and consult the archive. Or if a personal visit is not possible, an enquiry can be processed by an experienced researcher. As the museum receives between 20 and 30 enquires each week, the usual timescale for completion of enquires is up to 28 days. If you would like to submit an email enquiry then please use the link "Research Enquiry" on the left.

Fees for archival and historical research
All archive work is subject to a fee which is payable irrespective of whether or not the research is fruitful. Fees allow the museum to pay for the continued care and upkeep of the collections.

The total running cost for the Highlanders’ Museum currently stands at £12.00 per five mintues (at October 2009). That is £12 for EVERY five minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.
