For the last 230 years Highland Regiments have been the constant thread which has been central to the history of the Highlands and Islands. This thread continues today. Our Museum tells the stories of the many men, and of their families, who served with those Highland Regiments. We invite you to help us raise the £2million needed to enhance this remarkable collection and create the best military museum in Scotland. This will ensure the heritage of heroes will be seen and heard for generations to come

The museum is spread over the three floors of the former Lieutenant Governor’s House. This means that while we have elegant high ceilings, ornate fireplaces and the sweeping staircase of the original building, we are not easily accessible by people with mobility problems. An assistant controlled stair-lift on the back stairs does offer access to the middle floor, but no such facility is afforded to the top floor as the back stairs do not extend to the upper floor.  The museum is aware that this is a significant disappointment to some of our guests and this problem will be addressed in the forthcoming upgrade.

The museum does not offer catering or toilet facilities for visitors at the museum. Public toilets are, however, available at the back of the block, provided onsite by Historic Scotland. Directions: turn right out of museum front door, walk to end of block turn right, right again and toilets are on your right.

Similarly light catering is provided on the Fort. Directions: left out of the museum entrance, turn left at the edge of the building and the café is sign-posted on your right.
