The regimental history of the 79th Regiment, or Cameron Highlanders, is well known from official and public sources, but these are very brief on how the Regiment was raised. This account is written from the point of view of Lieutenant General Sir AlanCameron of Erracht, K.C.B., "the Colonel and Sole Founder of the Corps," from whose surviving papers the problems of the recruiting and survival of "such and important national Corps as the Cameron Highlanders" come across as freshly as on the days that he wrote his often furious letters.
