The speaker, Brigadier Charles Grant was commissioned into the Queen's Own Highlanders in 1968. He commanded the 51st Highland Brigade and was Director Land Warfare before retiring to take up the post of Chief Executive of the Highland Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association. He retired from this appointment in 2007 and writes books on both military history and war gaming. He is President of ACFA (Scotland) and Honorary Colonel of 7 SCOTS. He is the historian for, and manages, the 51st Highland Division web site.
