The regiment was\u00a0raised\u00a0by\u00a0Sir Alan Cameron of Erracht formed during the\u00a0midst\u00a0of the French Revolutionary Wars\u00a0in 1793. It was\u00a0originally known as the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameronian Volunteers)\u00a0named\u00a0after the powerful Clan Cameron.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Cameron\u2019s first operations were not overly successful; having been deployed to Flanders in 1794 to take part in the French Revolutionary Wars, the\u00a0regiment\u00a0fell to a quick defeat.\u00a0Under the threat of disbandment, the\u00a0Camerons were\u00a0instead sent to the West Indies\u00a0and were\u00a0stationed in Martinique for\u00a0two\u00a0years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Known as the 79th Regiment of Foot (Cameron Highlanders)\u00a0from 1804, the Camerons\u00a0fought throughout Europe for the next twenty years; they\u00a0played a vital role\u00a0in the Peninsula War, and\u00a0in defeating the French at Waterloo in 1815.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The regiment became known as the\u00a079th\u00a0Queen\u2019s Own Cameron Highlanders in 1873.\u00a0Serving mainly in Africa throughout the late nineteenth and early\u00a0twentieth\u00a0centuries, the\u00a0regiment\u00a0also fought in WWI and WWI before being amalgamated with the Seaforths in 1961.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Highlanders\u2019 Museum follows the story of the Camerons from their formation in 1793 until 2006. The Museum collection contains a remnant of the original Colours of the 79th Camerons, which were presented at Stirling by Sir Alan Cameron in January 1794.<\/p>\n

An officers\u2019 uniform of the 79th Cameron Highlanders included a red doublet jacket with green facings and gold-coloured brass buttons. An original example of this uniform dating back to the early nineteenth century is on display in the Cameron Room.\u00a0<\/p>\n
