On 7th February 1961, the military adjustments outlined in the Defence White Paper of 1957 led to the amalgamation of the 1st Battalion Seaforth Highlanders with the 1st Battalion Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, forming the Queen\u2019s Own Highlanders (Seaforths and Camerons).<\/p>\n

For its first mission, the 1st Battalion was sent to suppress the Brunei Revolt, part of the Indonesia\u2013Malaysia confrontation; the regiment stayed in Brunei and North Borneo until 1963. Between 1971 and 1993, the Queen\u2019s Own Highlanders completed eight tours of duty in Northern Ireland; sadly, the regiment lost seven troops during The Troubles. Stationed in the Falkland Islands after the conflict of 1982, the regiment was awarded the Wilkinson Sword of Peace for its contribution to community relations. In 1991, the regiment was deployed to Saudi Arabia to take part in the successful Operation \u2018Granby\u2019, aiming to recover Kuwait from the occupying forces of Iraq.<\/p>\n

From a hand grenade from the Brunei Rebellion, to a Bornean war shield, to an Argentinian military helmet found after the Falklands War; The Highlanders\u2019 Museum collection represents the dynamic history of the Queen\u2019s Own Highlanders and their travels all over the world.<\/p>\n

This oil painting by E Kelbett was painted in 1980. It depicts Lieutenant Colonel D N A Blair of the 1st Battalion Queens Own Highlanders who was killed by an IRA bomb at Warren Point in South Armagh on the 27th of August 1979. 16 other soldiers also died in the attack.<\/p>\n

From a hand grenade from the Brunei Rebellion, to a Bornean war shield, to an Argentinian military helmet found after the Falklands War; The Highlanders\u2019 Museum collection represents the dynamic history of the Queen\u2019s Own Highlanders and their travels all over the world.<\/p>\n

This oil painting by E Kelbett was painted in 1980. It depicts Lieutenant Colonel D N A Blair of the 1st Battalion Queens Own Highlanders who was killed by an IRA bomb at Warren Point in South Armagh on the 27th of August 1979. 16 other soldiers also died in the attack.<\/p>\n
