He was commissioned into the 79th Highlanders on 1st June 1794 aged just twelve.

During the Peninsula War in 1811, the British-Portuguese Army under the Duke of Wellington checked an attempt by the French Army of Portugal to relieve the besieged city of Almeida in Spain. Lieutenant Colonel Phipps Cameron was the Commanding Officer of the 79th Highland Regiment that had been tasked with holding the village of Fuentes de Oñoro. The French sent forward an entire Division of Infantry against the 79th; the village provided excellent cover for the British Infantry whilst the French were severely restricted in the narrow streets. However, the French did have some initial success surrounding and overpowering two companies of the 79th; Lieutenant Colonel Philips Cameron was killed aged 29. The time gained by the 79th holding the village allowed for other regiments of the British-Portuguese Army to drive the French Army out of the village.

Such was the esteem of Philips Cameron, that the Duke of Wellington as well as all available General’s attended the funeral.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#b89632″ header_text_color=”#895925″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Reasearch by Neil Thompson-Burton

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text disabled_on=”on|on|off” _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Barlow Semi Condensed||||||||” header_text_align=”center” header_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_font_size=”80px” header_line_height=”1.2em” header_2_text_align=”left” text_orientation=”right” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”|||25px|false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|desktop” custom_padding=”0px||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

THE

PERSON

BEHIND

THE PORTRAIT

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ disabled_on=”off|off|on” _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#000000″ background_enable_image=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ custom_padding_last_edited=”on|phone” _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding_tablet=”” custom_padding_phone=”||0px|0px||” scroll_fade_enable=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” motion_trigger_start=”top”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text disabled_on=”off|off|off” _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Barlow Semi Condensed||||||||” header_text_align=”center” header_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_font_size=”50px” header_line_height=”1.2em” header_2_text_align=”left” text_orientation=”right” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”0px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

THE

PERSON

BEHIND

THE PORTRAIT

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_3_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_3_letter_spacing=”1.2px” header_3_line_height=”1.5em” custom_margin=”||8px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Philips Cameron was the eldest son of Lieutenant General Sir Allan Cameron of Erracht. The time gained by the 79th holding the village allowed for other regiments of the British-Portuguese Army to drive the French Army out of the village.

Such was the esteem of Philips Cameron, that the Duke of Wellington as well as all available General’s attended the funeral.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#b89632″ header_text_color=”#895925″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

Reasearch by Neil Thompson-Burton

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#e5e5e5″ background_color_gradient_direction=”90deg” background_enable_image=”off” custom_padding=”||7px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”|auto|2px|auto||” custom_padding=”||4px|||” scroll_fade_enable=”on” global_colors_info=”{}” motion_trigger_start=”top”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” header_font=”Barlow Semi Condensed||||||||” header_text_align=”right” header_text_color=”#000000″ header_font_size=”80px” header_line_height=”1.2em” header_2_text_align=”left” header_2_text_color=”#000000″ text_orientation=”right” custom_margin_tablet=”” custom_margin_phone=”|||0px|false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|phone” custom_padding=”0px|||||” hover_enabled=”0″ header_text_align_tablet=”left” header_text_align_phone=”” header_text_align_last_edited=”on|phone” header_font_size_tablet=”” header_font_size_phone=”50px” header_font_size_last_edited=”on|phone” global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

INSIDE

THE MUSEUM

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.10.6″ _module_preset=”default” text_text_color=”#000000″ header_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_3_text_color=”#FFFFFF” header_3_letter_spacing=”1.2px” header_3_line_height=”1.5em” custom_padding=”16px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

This original watercolour painting shows the death of Lieutenant Colonel Philips Cameron at Juentes d’Onor (Fuentes de Oñoro) in 1811, and was painted by Harry Payne.
