FOUNDING THE REGIMENT…

FOUNDING THE REGIMENT…

On 17th September 1994, the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders amalgamated with the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons) to form the 1st Battalion Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons).

The first duty of the newly amalgamated regiment was a tour of Northern Ireland from 1995 – 1997. It was then deployed to Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo during the Yugoslav Wars, and remained there from 1998  2003. Following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre on the 11th of September 2001, The Highlanders saw action in Iraq and Afghanistan. On 28th March 2006, the regiment became known as The Highlanders, 4th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (4 SCOTS), and is still active today.

INSIDE THE MUSEUM…

INSIDE THE MUSEUM…

From terrain maps of Afghanistan to khaki uniforms worn in Iraq and world-class modern weapons, The Highlanders’ Museum is dedicated to collecting items connected to The Highlanders (1994 – 2006). Although these objects represent a much more recent part of our collective and regimental history, it is crucial that the Museum conserves and documents these histories for later generations.

The collection holds the rare Freedom Medallion, which was presented to The Highlanders, 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland by Aberdeen City Council on 1st of July 2006. The medallion represents the Freedom of The City of Aberdeen, and has been awarded by the city to both individuals, organisations, and military units.
